A medical-legal partnership between the Cook Children’s Health Care System and the Texas A&M School of Law is helping individuals defend their health care needs. Through this collaboration, students from the law school directly apply their education and advocacy skills by representing Cook Children’s patients and their families for free as they navigate social, economic and environmental challenges that directly affect their access to medical care.

The partnership has already seen positive results since its beginning in March 2020, with dozens of resolved cases boosting patients’ quality of life by addressing their legal stresses. Students have helped clients qualify for public benefits, obtain guardianship and remediate unsafe housing issues.

“So many factors beyond the scope of traditional medical care impact our patients’ health,” said Dr. Vida Amin, medical director of Cook Children’s Neighborhood Clinics. “Having an accessible, dedicated resource for our families to turn to for assistance in navigating their legal challenges is an invaluable addition to the family-centered care we strive to provide every day.”
