The Texas A&M Solar Car Racing Team recently received a $15,000 donation from Peterbilt Motors Co. to aid its goal of designing, building and racing fully electric and solar-powered vehicles.

Revived in 2022 after a hiatus since the late 1990s, the 80-plus-member team encompasses mechanical, electrical and business divisions. The team attends national competitions each year, including the Electrek Formula Sun Grand Prix this summer, where they raced with their car, Duodecim. “Donations like this help get students out on the track, where they gain critical experience for their future,” said Ian Burress ’24, the team’s project manager.

Mechanical, electrical and business teams all worked together to assemble and race Duodecim this summer with the help of a $15,000 donation from Peterbilt Motors Co.

Bill Kahn ’82, a senior principal engineer at Peterbilt Motors and a member of Texas A&M University’s Mechanical Engineering Industry Advisory Board, played a pivotal role in securing the donation. “Peterbilt Motors invests in student teams like this to create well-rounded engineers and stay at the forefront of solar car research,” Kahn said. “These projects provide hands-on experience and allow them to quickly move into the industry when they graduate.”

The team’s discoveries may also be applicable to research Peterbilt Motors pursues in developing clean transportation solutions.
