Launched by the Department of Residence Life in the Division of Student Affairs, the Grocery Give & Grab (G3) program is part of an ongoing effort to combat food insecurity and reduce food waste among Aggies.
Since spring 2019, the program has allowed students to donate any unopened, unexpired and nonperishable food items into one of 12 bins placed in residential neighborhoods as they leave for the winter or summer break. Residents experiencing food insecurity are encouraged to take items they need without permission or paperwork.
“It helps Aggies in a discrete way,” said Marcela Lopez ’23, a student assistant working with the initiative. “They can grab food and go without shame or judgment.”
In spring 2022, the Aggie Green Fund—a grantmaking organization for campus sustainability projects—provided funding for bookcases to be placed at permanent donation locations. In addition, beginning in fall 2022, G3 locations were added to the 12th Can’s list of Pocket Pantries across campus to provide convenient access to food for students in need.
