While not an Aggie herself, Myrtle Jones decided to use her success as senior vice president of tax at Halliburton to create the Myrtle Jones and Emmitt Nathanial Penelton ’22 Foundation Excellence Award in Accounting. Named after her son, a Texas A&M master’s student in accounting at Mays Business School, Jones hopes the award encourages more Black students to consider a degree in accounting, a profession she considers the foundation of business.
“Not only will this award make college financially available to more Black students,” Jones said, “but I hope it will also encourage the university to recruit more Black students in accounting, because we need the best and brightest in our profession across all ethnicities and genders.”
Jones’ gift adds to the legacy of Foundation Excellence Awards at Texas A&M, which have helped recruit and retain outstanding undergraduates from historically underserved groups and those facing significant economic hurdles since 1999.
“I don’t want kids like me to get left behind,” Jones emphasized. “Everybody deserves an opportunity to attend a university that most motivates them to get their education.”
